Outdoor air events
Wildfire smoke, urban traffic peaks, garden bonfires. The wrong ventilation strategy turns a bad outdoor hour into a bad indoor week.
When the air outside is worse than inside.
Europe and the UK have had a rising number of significant outdoor air events over the past decade. Wildfire smoke from southern Europe and Canada has reached northern cities. Urban traffic peaks exceed WHO guidance on most weekdays. Local events — bonfire nights, fireworks, nearby construction — produce concentrated short-term spikes.
Indoor air follows outdoor air within hours if the house is ventilating naturally. On a bad outdoor day, the best thing you can do for your indoor environment is nothing — close up, filter, and wait. Envora helps you know when that is.
You would suspect this when any of these feel familiar.
- Smoke or haze visible in the distance
- An AQI warning on weather apps
- Indoor PM2.5 rising without an indoor cause
- The smell of smoke from outdoors
Quietly watching the exact signals.
Envora tracks indoor PM1 / PM2.5 / PM10 continuously. When indoor rises without an indoor source, outdoor air is the likely culprit.
The Envora app pulls a local AQI and cross-references it against your indoor reading, surfacing a clear "close up" advisory when outdoor is materially worse.
After the event, Envora tracks how long your home takes to return to baseline — a direct read on your filtration strategy.

Practical steps, not panic.
- 1 Close windows and any trickle vents you can control; upgrade to external-door seals if you live near a main road.
- 2 Run a HEPA purifier in the room you occupy; re-check the filter date — an expired filter is worse than none.
- 3 Avoid outdoor exercise and postpone ventilating the home until AQI drops; Envora will tell you when.
- 4 If you use MVHR, it will usually include filtration — check the grade, and keep up with replacements.
- 5 After the event passes, reverse: open windows wide to accelerate the clear, and watch Envora return to baseline.
