There are three indoor gases worth quiet, continuous attention. Carbon monoxide at 1–5 ppm — the kind that leaks slowly from gas hobs, poorly flued heaters, a neighbour's boiler on a shared wall. Nitrogen dioxide from any gas combustion. And the whole VOC family — cleaning products, furniture off-gassing, candles, printers, 3D printers, cooking residues.

None of these trigger the audible CO alarm your smoke detector includes. All of them accumulate. Low-level CO is linked to headaches, fatigue and cognitive effects at concentrations a life-safety alarm ignores. VOCs are linked to "sick building" symptoms that rarely have a named cause.

What to do

Practical steps, not panic.

  2. 2 Ventilate while cooking on gas, before and during — not just after.
  3. 3 Let new furniture off-gas in a ventilated room for a week before putting it in a bedroom.
  4. 4 Switch to fragrance-free and solvent-free cleaners where possible; use them with windows open.
